Shark-Free Challenge

February 12h,

Eight players competed in this weekend’s Shark-Free Challenge. Pre-tournament favorites included Evan Helman and Ellen Rosenfeld. However, as often it is the case, a new unrated player joined the field, throwing off anyone’s tournament predictions. This player was high-schooler Santiago Montoya, who has recently gotten back into chess and often spars with players at the club during Coffee Casual on Wednesday nights. It seems the practice has paid off, as Santiago won all three of his games to take sole first place! There was a three way tie for second between Evan Helman, Ellen Rosenfeld and Patrick O’Brien Jr. who was only playing in his second tournament at the CCFC. Patrick also finished ahead of his father who also played in the tournament! Overall it was a fun and memorable event and we hope to see everyone again soon!
