2017 CCFC Club Championships

This year's championships were filled with exciting games and many upsets and surprise results. The upsets began early in the first round. Eugene Ulyanov, Eric Song, and Dmitri Efimov all downed experts in the open section. Ulyanov impressed by beating another expert and drawing against NM Ian Harris in the final round to gain over 100 rating points, an almost unheard of feat at this level.

Tournament favorite FM Leif Pressman started well with a win, but two draws in rounds two and three effectively eliminated him from contention. The one player immune to upsets was FM Hans Niemann, who won this year's championship with a perfect 4/4 score, thus also earning the $100 bonus for a perfect score!

The U1800 section also had its share of upsets. By round three all of the four favorites in the 1700's had suffered losses. Only Leo Bykhovsky was able to recover with a final round win to finish with 3/4, however, it was not enough. Jack Klein and Evan Helman had already scored 3/3 and were playing each other on board 1 to determine the winner. After a hard fought game, they settled for a draw and shared 1st place and the top U1600 prize (!!) with 3.5/4 each.

Thank you to everyone that participated and congratulations to all the players who had such spectactular results. We look forward to another exciting championship tournament next year!
