CCFC Club Championships 2022

Today, CCFC hosted the annual Club Championships! This highly competitive tournament featured 32 strong players, all over the 1600 rating mark.

Players Gary Leschinsky, Oliver Chernin, Kyle Dong, Jordan Groff, Michael Uwakwe, and Brent McCreesh all ended the tournament with 2.5/3 points, tying for third place. There was a four-way tie for second place. FM Max Lu, NM Nathaniel Moor, NM Vladimir Polyakin, and NM Mark DeDona all played very strong games, ending the tournament with 3/4 total points! In first place, there was a two-way tie between FM Tanitoluwa Adewumi and IM Justin Sarkar. Both players ended the four round tournament with a score of 4/4 points. To establish a definitive victor, Sarkar and Adewumi played an additional 5 minute blitz.

In the blitz game, FM Tanitoluwa Adewumi played the black pieces against IM Justin Sarkar. A Sicilian Defense was used, which went into the Taimanov Variation. On move 6, Sarkar decided to play an aggressive g4 pawn push! Adewumi kept his king in the center, choosing to expand his space on the queenside, as Sarkar pushed on the kingside. Adewumi traded his queen for two rooks on move 30 of the game, and was able to create a passed pawn on the C file. Both players faced serious time pressure at this point, but Adewumi was once again able to display his quickplaying ability. Tanitoluwa Adewumi definitively won the 2022 CCFC Club Championship!
